Road trip gas calculator
Estimate how much gas your road trip will cost. Enter the distance, your car's highway MPG and the price per gallon.
Fill in distance, MPG and price to see your cost.
How the gas cost formula works
Fuel cost = distance ÷ MPG × price per gallon. A 600-mile drive in a 30 MPG car uses 20 gallons; at $3.50 a gallon that is $70.
Use your real highway mileage rather than the sticker number, and add a cushion for detours, traffic and air conditioning.
Why a full route beats a single average price
Gas prices can vary by a dollar or more between states and countries. The XCRSN planner prices each stretch of your actual route using live station prices where available, lists gas stations by mile (including Costco and other warehouse brands), adds tolls, and converts currencies on cross-border trips.
Electric vehicles
For an EV, the formula is distance ÷ miles per kWh × price per kWh. Search your EV in the planner to see chargers along the route with network rates.
