How to plan a road trip

A good road trip plan covers four things: the route, how far you drive each day, what it will cost, and where you will stop and sleep. Here is how to work through them in order.

1. Choose your start, destination and must-see stops

Start with the fixed points: where you leave from, where you need to end up, and any places you refuse to skip. Everything else in the plan bends around these.

Put them in order on a map before you think about hotels or budgets. Seeing the shape of the drive tells you quickly whether the trip is a weekend run or a week-long haul.

In XCRSN: the Route tab starts from your current location. Type a destination, add stops, drag to reorder, or swap start and end.

2. Decide how many hours you will drive each day

Most drivers are comfortable with 6–8 hours behind the wheel per day. Past that, fatigue builds and the trip stops being fun.

Divide total driving time by your daily limit to get the number of driving days, then add rest days for places you want to explore.

In XCRSN: The Plan tab splits the route into days from your driving-per-day setting and shows arrival times for each stop.

3. Pick the route type: fastest, scenic or toll-free

The fastest route is not always the best. Scenic routes add time but often make the trip. Avoiding tolls can save money, or cost hours.

Compare the options on time and cost before you commit.

In XCRSN: Switch between Fastest and Scenic, and turn on Avoid Tolls, on the Route tab. Toll costs show under the route.

4. Budget fuel or charging costs

Fuel cost is simple: distance ÷ fuel economy × price per gallon (or per kWh for EVs). Prices change a lot between regions, so use prices along your actual route.

Use your real-world highway mileage, not the window-sticker number, and keep a cushion for detours.

In XCRSN: Search your vehicle on the Fuel tab. XCRSN lists gas stations or chargers along the whole route by mile, with live prices where available and the cheapest stop on each stretch.

5. Plan fuel, rest and food stops

Plan a break every 2–3 hours. Rest areas, fuel stations and places to eat often line up, so combine them to save time.

Don't wait for the warning light. In remote areas, fill up when you can.

In XCRSN: The Stops tab finds rest areas on your side of the highway, food, dog parks and highly rated sights, and adds them to your route in one tap.

6. Book hotels where each day ends

Once you know your daily pace, you know roughly where each night lands. Book hotels near the highway for easy early starts, and reserve ahead in peak season.

Travelling with a pet? Check pet policies before you book.

In XCRSN: The Hotels tab finds hotels around each overnight stop, with a pet-friendly filter, and adds your hotel to the route.

7. Check the weather along the way

Weather at your destination is not enough. Mountain passes and long stretches between cities can have very different conditions on the day you cross them.

In XCRSN: The Plan tab shows the forecast for each part of the route at the time you will be there.

8. Share the plan and get it into your navigation app

Send the plan to everyone in the car, and keep a copy that works without signal.

Load the full route, stops included, into the navigation app you will actually drive with.

In XCRSN: The Go tab opens the route in Google Maps or Apple Maps, makes a share link, exports GPX, and prints a run-sheet that works offline.
