How the fuel cost formula works

Fuel cost = distance ÷ MPG × price per gallon. A 600-mile drive in a 30 MPG car uses 20 gallons; at $3.50 a gallon that is $70.

We trim published MPG by 10% because ratings run optimistic at highway speed. Adjust it to what your car really gets.

Why prices change along the route

Fuel prices can vary widely between states and countries, so each stretch of your drive is priced with its own regional average — in the local currency on cross-border trips.

Electric vehicles

For an EV, energy = distance × kWh per 100 mi ÷ 100. Add what you expect to pay per kWh to see the cost.
