How to split road trip costs fairly

The simplest fair split is the total divided by everyone in the car. If one person owns the car, many groups also add about 10–20 cents per mile for wear and tear and give that to the driver.

Typical daily road trip budget

For two people in the US, a mid-range trip often runs $150–$250 per day: a $120–$180 hotel, $60–$100 of food and the rest in gas. Camping or staying with friends cuts that in half.
