Atlanta to Clemson: the drive, the stops and where to sleep

Distance
About 130 miles (210 km)
Time

Best time
September–November

You can make Atlanta to Clemson in about 2 hours, but the people who love this drive never do it in one straight shot. At around 130 miles on I-85 and US-76, it is short enough to start after breakfast and long enough to earn a night somewhere memorable before kickoff.

Leaving Atlanta

Aim to clear Atlanta before the morning rush, or after it, never in it. Fill the tank on the edge of town where prices usually drop, set the playlist, and settle in for the first 63 miles to Commerce.

The headline stop on this route is Memorial Stadium, Death Valley. Leave real time for it; it sets the tone for the whole trip.

Commerce

Commerce sits about 63 miles in. It makes a good spot to stretch, eat something that is not from a gas station, and swap drivers.

Nearby, Running down the Hill is worth the short detour if the day is going well.

Anderson, the last stretch

Anderson sits about 114 miles in. It is the natural place to stop for the night: hotels are plentiful, rates beat the big-city ends of the route, and you wake up with the hardest miles already behind you.

Rolling into Clemson

The final 17 miles always go faster than you expect. Save a little energy for Lake Hartwell; it is a fitting finish.

By the end you will have seen Memorial Stadium, Death Valley, Running down the Hill and Lake Hartwell, and you will understand why this corridor is a classic.

Game day at Memorial Stadium

On a Clemson Tigers home weekend, Clemson changes completely. Rooms near Memorial Stadium sell out months ahead and rates can triple, so lock in your night as soon as the schedule drops, or stay one town back along I-85 and US-76 and drive in early.

Plan to arrive the night before kickoff. Lots and tailgate spots fill hours before the game, and the drive home after the final whistle is the slowest 130 miles of the season, so a second night is usually the smarter play.

When to go and how to pace it

One night is the sweet spot. Clemson or Anderson, SC is where most people stay, so book ahead on summer weekends.

Check live gas prices along I-85 and US-76 before you go; they can swing a lot from one state or county to the next. XCRSN prices every leg for your exact car.
